What is a 'long drive' in A desrt?
Because the world is procedurally generated and endless, a 'long drive' is any planned 50+ km leg between two waypoints where fuel, water, and battery reserves are the limiting factor. The fuel + distance projection tools model this directly.
Pick the engine first, not the destination
Engine choice dictates fluid consumption. The V8 (EngineD) Diesel travels >237 km per litre of diesel at top speed, making it the best long-range engine. Use the Vaz Engine (0.10 L/km gas) for short-range exploration, Injection (~0.08 L/km gas) as the first mid-game upgrade, and V8 for cross-map legs.
Refill cadence — 60% of target distance
Recommended refill stop is roughly 60% of your target distance, capped at worst-case range. The fuel calculator surfaces this as a Yellow / Red / Green traffic-light pill. Plan to refill BEFORE the Yellow state, not after.
Avoid mid-route swarms
Long drives die when you stop to clear a ruin and a swarm strips your doors. Sound the horn to lure zombies away, drive 50 m out, then re-enter the ruin perimeter. The zombie encounter calculator models door-loss probability per cluster size and weapon DPS.
Gearbox Pro on long pulls
With Gearbox Pro + Tire Big, the Vaz Engine hits 375 km/h. Cruise at ~60% of boosted top speed to maximize fuel economy — the calculator's gearbox multiplier (0.85 for Gearbox Pro) reflects this.
Co-op fuel splits
For 4-player squads on a V8 (EngineD) build, split fuel inventory across vehicles so any one loss is recoverable. The round-trip planner (planned in tools) divides per-leg consumption across player_count.
